Slide 4 - Key Definitions Critical Element A component of a position consisting of one or more duties and responsibilities which are of such importance that unacceptable performance on the element would result in an overall performance level of Unacceptable. Such elements are used only to measure performance at the individual level. Performance Standard A management-approved expression of performance threshold(s), requirement(s), or expectation(s) that must be met to be appraised at a particular level of performance. When this expression of performance is used in conjunction with the rating scale and achievement level descriptions, it constitutes a standard.
