About This Presentation

Slide 1 - Video Games Vicente del Pedregal
Slide 2 - Introduction Video games have a very long history, although, the games themselves were started by Pong, in the 70’s (although the concept was created in the 50’s). The companies which created them where founded over 100 years ago, like Nintendo (the name means “leave luck to heaven”), which started making game cards, and many other companies started, even before there where computers available, like SEGA, SONY, COLECO, etc.
Slide 3 - The Beginning In 1958 in an effort to keep visitors to the Brookhaven National Laboratories in New York from being bored, physicist Willy Higinbotham invents an interactive table-tennis-like game that is displayed on an oscilloscope. He improves on his invention a year later by displaying it on a 15-inch monitor, thus, creating the first video game. Believing that he hasn't invented anything, Higinbotham doesn't patent the device
Slide 4 - In 1961 MIT student Steve Russell creates Spacewar, the first interactive computer game, on a Digital PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor-1) minicomputer. Limited by the computer technology of the time, Spacewar used new teletype terminals with CRT screens to display the graphics. In 1971 Nutting manufactures 1,500 Computer Space machines. The components are packaged with a 13-inch black-and-white TV set in a futuristic-looking cabinet. The first arcade video game is released, but the public finds it too difficult to play.
Slide 5 - In 1972, ATARI, a recent company created by Nolan Bushnell, hires Al Alcorn to program games, but since Alcorn is too inexpirienced Bushnell makes him program a simple tennis game for practice, making PONG and copyright the names, after trying to sell the game to arcade manufacters (unsuccesfully) Bushnell decides to market the game himself. Pong is test-marketed in Andy Capps, a local bar. Within two weeks the test unit breaks down because the coin drop is flooded with quarters. Pong is a success.
Slide 6 - Since then a lot has happened in the story of video games, like the beginning of the consoles with the Magnavox, going thru the ATARI 2600, the COLECO Telstar, and many more, since in the middles 70’s and early 80’s there was a video game boom, also, great games were released back then, like Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Battlezone (which was used for training by the US army) Joust, Centipede, Galaga, etc.
Slide 7 - Genres and types of VG Well, after that much resumed history of the beginning of video games, I will list the types of Video Games that exist. Fighting FPS (First Person Shooter) RPG (Role playing Game) Simulators (racing, flight, dancing, etc) Platforms Action Survival Horror Online Games Shoot ‘em up Strategy Sports Puzzle Variety Games
Slide 8 - Fighting Many people believe that Street Fighter was the first fighting game, although it set the basis for the genre the first one was called “Yie Ahr kung-Fun” for the Arcade. This type of games are simple, defeat your opponent with a series of maneuvers or “combos” by hitting him until his life bar is empty, and its usually 1 vs. 1. Some games are: The Street Fighter Saga, Guilty Gear saga, King of Fighters saga, Dead or Alive Saga and Mortal Kombat saga. Back
Slide 9 - FPS The most known FPS is DOOM, a game that created the concept and gave video games a new twist, making yourself even more inmerse in the game, by giving you a First person view, like in real life. This games are usually very violent and gory, but that’s whats makes them so good A few examples are: Counter Strike, Doom series, Wolfestein series and Half life. Back
Slide 10 - RPG The first popular RPG was Dragon Quest, by ENIX, since then, RPGs have been in almost every console, always having a medieval setup, mixed with magic, lately, RPGs have been turning into a more mature storyline, making them a very good choice if you like a good story, rather than great graphics, in this type of games, you play with a character that you can upgrade, by gaining levels, buying armor, and you command more than just 1 char. At the time, generally its 3, by casting magic, using swords, summons, etc Some examples are: Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy series, Tales of… series (Tales of eternia, symphonia, etc) Chrono Trigger, Arc the Lad series and Suikoden series. Back
Slide 11 - Simulator There are plenty of types of simulators, flight simulator, race, dancing, DJing, even date simulators, wich arent popular here in the West, but in Japan, are very popular, guess there are a lot of lonely people there. A simulator does exactly what it says, it simulates a situation, for example it simulates the experience of flying a Boeing, racing a Ferrari, dancing like the best, or even create a life (the Sims, was the first to show this, by allowing you to control totally a digital “you” Some examples are: Gran Turismo series, Flight Simulator series, Sim city series, Civilization series, The Sims, Dance Dance Revolution, EZ2 DJ. Back
Slide 12 - Platforms This are the basic “jump on the platform” kind of game, this where the earlier games, but now there aren't many games of this genre, mostly flash games, which anyone can do, by using macromedia flash. Some examples are: Mario Bros series, Tomb Raider, Megaman Series. Back
Slide 13 - Action Well, what can be said about this genre that the title doesn’t say? Here you have to eliminate enemies as they come, generally they have a stationary position, unlike the shooters, where they swarm you until you die. In every stage there is a Boss, which you are supposed to eliminate, by shooting him, punching him, and trying to dodge its attacks, it depends of the game. Some examples are: Megaman Series (also a platformer), Metal Gear Solid series (its kind of more tactical) Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and Jacks and Daxter. Back
Slide 14 - Survival Horror Here, you are alone, in a dark set-up, only with your gun, sometimes, not even that. The thing about this kinds of games, its that they really can scare the hell out of you, by not having a Background music, and creating very tense situations in which you have to react quickly or die. Some examples are: Resident Evil series, Alone in the Dark series, Dino Crisis series, Parasite Eve series and Silent Hill series. Back
Slide 15 - Online Games This are very popular basicaly because you can actuly interact with real people, even if they are kilometers away, there are various types of Online games, like MMORPG (Massive multiplayer online rpg) online FPS, online Racing, etc. Some of this games are paid games in which you have to pay a monthly fee, but you can find a free server for almost every game Some examples: Ragnarok Online, Counter Strike, Ultima Online, Unreal tournament series, Starcraft, Warcraft, etc. Back
Slide 16 - Shoot ‘em Up In this tyoe of games you basicaly have to shoot at everything that moves, simple as that, and the enemies come swarming at you, and genereally if they touch you, you die. Some examples are: Metal Slug series, Contra series, Robotron. Back
Slide 17 - Strategy Here you have to build an army, by covering all necessary needs, food, places to live, money and resources, even technology. This fames are the most common games that can be played online or alone in the computer, this ones require a quick an smart mind to control, and use efficiently your army, they aren't generally for children, since they are very difficult Some examples are: Warcraft series, Starcraft, Age of Empires series, Civilization series, Romancing Saga series. Back
Slide 18 - Sport Instead of playing a sport outside, why not playing one inside? A good option if it rains, this games simulate a sport, like football, American football, golf, basketball, baseball, runing, etc. Some examples are: Winning Eleven series, Madden series, Tony Hawk’s pro skater series, NBA Hang time series, Hot shots golf series, etc. Back
Slide 19 - Puzzle This games challenge your mind to overcome different obstacles, this ones aren't like jigsaw puzzles, here you have to find a way out of a labyrinth, getting out of dungeons, etc. Some examples are: Tetris, ICO, The lost Vikings, etc Back
Slide 20 - Variety Games This ones are the most funniest games, since most of the test you are supposed to do are in a comical situation, for example, throwing a cake in a wedding to the guest in Bishy Bashy Special, or trying to avoid cars and motorcycles while you are in a stretcher that just fell from the ambulance in Incredible Crisis, this games aren't very popular here I the west, because most of them don’t get here and stay in Japan. Some examples are: Bishy Bashy Special, Incredible Crisis, Pikmin, Guitaroo Man, REZ, Mario Party series. Back
