Slide 3 - What I Cloud Computing? Cloud computing is internet-based computing, in which shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand “as a service”. In cloud computing the service is run on “The Cloud” and take up very little of you computers resources. "Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.“ - The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Slide 5 - History of “The Cloud” In the 60’s J.C.R. Licklider wrote a series of papers on what he called the “intergalactic computer network”; his vision was for everyone on the globe to be interconnected and be able access programs and data at any site, from anywhere. This idea was similar to what AMD was calling cloud computing. Also in the 60’s John McCarthy opined that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility." The first scholarly use of the term “cloud computing” was in a 1997 lecture by Ramnath Chellappa Since the internet only started to offer significant bandwidth in the 90’s, cloud computing for the masses has been something of a late developer. Slide 6 - Cloud Milestones In 1999 Salesforce.com pioneered the concept of delivering enterprise applications via the internet. The services firm paved the way for both specialist and mainstream software firms to deliver applications over the internet. In 2002 Amazon Web Services provided a suite of cloud-based services including storage, computation and even human intelligence through the Amazon Mechanical Turk. In 2009, as Web 2.0 hit its stride, Google and others started to offer browser-based enterprise applications, though services such as Google Docs
Slide 7 - How Cloud Computing is being used Cloud Computing can be broken up into 3 main Categories. Software as a Service (SaaS) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Platform as a service (PaaS) Since applications that use cloud computing aren’t actually stored on a users machines one of the main uses of the cloud is collaborative working and distributed access, meaning accessing the same data on multiple devices.
Slide 8 - Software as a Service (SaaS) aka “Software on Demand” It is a software distribution model in which applications are hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers through the internet. Largely free services Examples Email (Gmail, Yahoo, etc) Productivity (Google Docs, Microsoft Live, SharePoint) Google Maps, MapQuest, Online Banking, etc.
Slide 9 - Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) delivers computer infrastructure, typically a platform virtualization environment, as a service. This means rather than purchasing the actual equipment(hardware and/or software) clients instead buy those resources as a fully outsourced service. IaaS evolved from virtual private server offerings. Examples: Storage space as a service(Humyo, OpenDrive, Mozy, etc) Infrastructure as a service(Google App Engine) *“Super computing” as a Service (Amazon Web Services)
Slide 10 - Platform as a service (PaaS) Is the delivery of a computing platform (hardware architecture and software framework that allows software to run) as a service. Google ChromeOS Currently in a beta phase (currently called Chromium OS) Google is offering users an OS that is running entirely over the internet. Computers no longer need to run BIOS or start up applications, which translates into much faster boot times. You just turn on you computer and are connected to your personal cloud space where you can do everything you would normally do on your computer except now its being run at a remote location. This could allow users to own slower, outdated machine and as long as you have a good internet connection you have a powerful computer.

Slide 12 - Cloud Misconceptions PaaS vs IaaS and SaaS PaaS describes buying something more than IaaS in that the software (SaaS) is included in the offering. Since SaaS runs on infrastructure you could call it IaaS but generally you give credit to the reason you are using the service. Cloud vs Client-Server Client-Server is more localized while the Cloud is globally distributed.

Slide 14 - The future of Cloud Computing By 2020 most people will access software applications online and share and access information through the use of remote server networks, rather than depending primarily on personal computers. How fast this shift occurs is dependent on the advancement of internet access infrastructure.
