Slide 1 - Event - Event Learning Classical Conditioning Pavlovian Conditioning
Slide 2 - In the following 4 examples You will experience two events. Press the space bar to see the two events.
Slide 3 - For each example jot down on a piece of paper the relationship, if any, between the two events. That is, try to determine whether the appearance of one of the events is related to the appearance of the other event? When all four examples are finished, time lines will be provided that depict the events in the 4 examples.
Slide 4 - Two events will occur. Are they related in any way? #1
Slide 5 - Two events will occur. Are they related in any way? #2
Slide 6 - Two events will occur. Are they related in any way? #3
Slide 7 - Two events will occur. Are they related in any way? #4
Slide 8 - Time Lines The next slide shows time lines which describe the relationship between the two events. Each example contained the same events (a light bulb and bomb) occurring for the same duration (1/2 sec) and the same number of times (5). The interval of time between trials (ITI) was fixed at 10 seconds. The examples varied only in terms of the interstimulus interval (ISI) - the interval of time between the light bulb and bomb. In all except the first example, the light bulb preceded the bomb. DID you experience the two events as related in each example? If not, rate the examples from the most related to the least.
Slide 9 - Trace Conditioning Time Lines Event A = Light Bulb; Event B = Bomb ITI = 10 sec; # of trials = 5; ISI is Manipulated (IV) A B A B A B A B #1 #2 #3 #4 ISI= 7 sec ISI = 3 sec ISI = 1 sec Random
Slide 10 - Study the time lines on the previous slide and compare them with the notes you jotted down while viewing the examples. Briefly describe how your perceptions of a relationship between two events is influenced by the ISI that was manipulated in this brief experiment.
