Honour Killing Presentation Transcript

Slide 1 - Honour Killing
Slide 2 - Introduction of Honour killing An honor killing (honour killing) is the murder of a member of a family or social group by other members, due to the belief of the offender that the victim has brought dishonour upon the family or community. Honour killings are mostly against girls and women but have been extended to men.
Slide 3 - The perceived dishonor is normally the result of one of the following behaviors: Dressing in a manner unacceptable to the family or community, Wanting to terminate or prevent an arranged marriage or desiring to marry by own choice, Engaging non-sexual relationship perceived as inappropriate and engaging in homosexual acts.
Slide 4 - There is some evidence that homosexuality can also be perceived as grounds for honor killing by relatives. According to UNICEF, women who are victims of rape and sexual abuse are also often victims of honor killings because of the perception of dishonor that they bring to their families.
Slide 5 - According to the United Nations, there are over 5,000 cases of murder due to honor killings reported around the world each year.
Slide 6 - According to a 2010 study, perpetrators and victims of honor killings are largely found in Afghanistan, Albania, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Gaza Strip, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and the West Bank.
Slide 7 - HONOUR KILLING IN INDIA Honour killings are mostly practiced in the parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Slide 8 - In 1990 the National Commission for Women set up a statutory body in order to address the issues of honor killings among some ethnic groups in India. The Indian state of Punjab has a large number of honor killings. According to Punjab Police, 34 honor killings were reported in the state between 2008 and 2010: 10 in 2008, 20 in 2009, and four in 2010.
Slide 9 - Dowry killings actually outnumber honor killings, and they are on the rise. Women with insufficient dowries are murdered or driven to suicide in what are often disguised as kitchen accidents. For this reason they are sometimes called “bride burnings.” In 2008, there were over 8,000 dowry deaths reported in India alone.

Slide 14 - Support and protection The most important and dangerous time for victims is when they seek help from the services. Service providers may only have this one chance to provide effective support and potentially to save a life. Be aware 1. Provide training 2. Raise awareness around 3. Provide publicity materials
Slide 15 - Changes in national policy Police to perform full risk assessments National advisory group for ‘honour’ related crime Dedicated ‘honour’ related crime team/officer within each police force Councils to provide secure accommodation Long-term, secured resources for all organizations
Slide 16 - What can we do to prevent by honor killing? The mentality of the people has to change. We need to have stricter laws to tackle these kinds of killings as this is a crime which cannot be pardoned. Psychologically speaking, parents unconsciously abuse their wards to take revenge for the abuse they had themselves suffered at their own parents' hands
Slide 17 - Big Question - Is the society more important than your children? Such people can be termed as criminals who are far more dangerous than the terrorists. Terrorists kill people who are unknown to them. But these people who support honour killing and are a part of it are heartless because only a heartless individual can kill someone they love and that too for a baseless reason.
